Verni Kilims are one of the authentic and valuable arts among Shahsavan tribes. Many designs are carried out on this coating that reflects the talents nomadic carpet weavers. Some of these motifs are the expression symbolic concept of a particular subject, but however they may be are fully aware of the implications of these designs. The motifs of the Azerbaijan Shahsavan tribe’s Vernies, as symbolic, are representative of the desires of these people. One of the main features of the designs is their authenticity as they have been passed mouth to mouth from generation to generation. In this study, the issue of «seeking Rain» in the designs of these weaving has been studied.
Water is the most evident symbol for the life and it has the explicit mention to the Source of the life, that in the various regions have been importance regarding to the climatic and cultural conditions. Shahsavan tribe’s Verni kilims can be considered a central focus of expression and belief and desire to seeking rain. One of the motifs that expressed such a belief is the Gaul (pool) and long-necked birds floating in it. In this study, these motifs and symbolic concepts of them will be studied. Regarding to this point that the Subsistence economy of these tribes had been based on the ranching and nomadic, the water and seeking rain issue is most important among them and such as desire has showed themselves on the Verni Klims as the symbolic motifs in over time.
